If something here is product behaviour, it matches the dashboard and the API.

01What is GSM-7 vs Unicode?+

GSM-7 is the default SMS alphabet (160 characters in one segment). Characters outside that set — including many Ghanaian names with accents, emoji, or smart quotes — switch the message to UCS-2, which is 70 characters per segment.

02Why can one SMS be billed as several units?+

Concatenated messages use a header, so GSM-7 drops from 160 to 153 characters per extra segment, and Unicode from 70 to 67. Taysend bills each segment as a unit.
